Brothers, nine and 12, are among four shot dead in suspected murder-suicide in Texas hotel room

Two children are among four bodies found in a Texas hotel room with 'obvious gunshot wounds' in what is thought to have been a murder-suicide.

The bodies of Charles Schoenfeld, 41, and Brittany Howard, 31 were found alongside two brothers aged nine and 12 inside a room at Staybridge Suites in Dallas yesterday.

The reservation on the bedroom ended Tuesday morning and when staff knocked on the door at around 3pm they heard a single gunshot.

Those nearby claimed to have heard gunshot-like noises earlier in the day but put it down to a car backfiring, Fox4 Dallas-Fort Worth reported.

Hotel staff immediately backed away and called police. 

The brothers, Charlie and Noah Schoenfeld, both went to school in the Richardson Independent School District, according to NBC.

Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall revealed police are investigating the possibility of a murder-suicide, and it is not known who fired the final shot.

She said: 'This is the hardest part of the job, to see lives lost, and especially children.

 'So it's a tough day. It's a tough day whenever we lose a life, and today is no different. The sadness continues.'

Charlie was in seventh grade at Park Hill Junior High and Noah was in fourth grade at Bowie Elementary School.   

'Today has really been shocking, it's obviously tragic,' Richardson ISD Superintendent Dr. Jeannie Stone told NBC. 'It's been a day of a lot of sadness, heavy hearts and grieving.' 

Charlie was supposed to compete in a track meet on Thursday and Superintendent Stone added: 'I spent the day with all of the teachers that Noah and Charlie had in class and it was a wonderful day of hearing just loving sentiments about two wonderful wonderful special boys.'

The boys' mother is grieving their loss.

'According to witnesses, there were some sounds that sounded like gunshots earlier in the day. But no one could confirm,' Hall said. 'They thought that maybe it was backfire from traffic.'
